Viking Cheer Handbook:
Viking Cheer Mission Statement:
To provide a safe and structured environment for all participants. The cheerleaders will learn the basic fundamentals of their sport, and a self-pride that is developed by instilling the concept of teamwork and good sportsmanship. Safety is our first concern while having fun a very close second. Our hope is that the child has come to their sport with a desire to learn what they need to know about cheerleading. We also hope the child will walk away at the end of the season with a true understanding of the meaning of good sportsmanship, teamwork, dedication, and perseverance. We believe with proper preparation of our coaches and cheerleaders and the positive support from our parents, we will accomplish this goal.
Practices:
Practices will start on Tuesday, July 23rd at Osmond Park from 6-8pm (Mascots and Bantams will practice from 6-7:30pm)
Practices are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday thru August 20th
After that date, it will be determined which TWO days per week you will be practicing. Practices will remain outdoors until the first week of September.
Attendance will be taken at all practices.
Additional practices will be scheduled for competitions.
Parents are not to leave their children until a coach is present.
Please bring your child a few minutes early so that practice may begin on time with all the girls.
Parents are asked to arrive 10 minutes prior to the end of practice for notes/communications.
Girls should bring a water bottle and towel with them to each practice.
One bathroom break will be allowed during practice (for younger squads)… if more are consistently necessary, parents may be asked to stay in order to accommodate their daughter’s needs.
Uniforms:
Uniforms will be given out before the first game - you must be paid in full in order to receive your uniform.
A $125 deposit check must be collected before you can take the uniform home. Please make checks out to the VYFA. These checks will be held and cashed only if your child's uniform is not returned or damaged at the end of the season.
Uniforms must be kept clean. DO NOT DRY CLEAN - machine wash on delicate cycle and HANG DRY.
Bodysuits, spankies, pants, hairbow and socks are each cheerleaders' and do not have to be returned.
Competitions:
All squads will participate in 2 competitions. Please refer to the Competition Tab for more information on this year's competitions.
All girls will be required to purchase shoes for competition.
Games:
We will have a combination of home and away games. All of these games will be on Sunday, except for Homecoming weekend. (excluding Mascots)
Mascots will cheer for the flag program in Antioch each week on Saturday.
Girls are expected to come to all games. Parents must contact the coach if their daughter will not be able to attend. The other girls are counting on the whole squad in order to do stunts and routines.
Transportation is the parent’s responsibility.
Girls are expected to be at games ½ hour before scheduled game time to warm-up, practice and take attendance. Many times the games begin early based on how the day is running.
Girls are expected to stay for the entire game.
The games go on even in the rain and the girls are expected to cheer. Games are rarely canceled.
Girls should come in full uniform.
Girls, parents and spectators should conduct themselves with team spirit and show good sportsmanship.
Girls will not be permitted to go to the concession stand during the game.
There should be no eating while in uniform.
During Homecoming, girls will be required to cheer for at least 2 games during the weekend. (Sat. and Sun.)
All squads will be required to cheer for any play-off games that occur after the regular season.
Absences:
As with any sport it is necessary to limit the number of absences to provide a more beneficial and consistent experience for our cheerleaders. We will follow these guidelines:
No unexcused absences are accepted.
An absence will only be excused for illness, family events or anything school related.
The parent should contact the coach before practice for notification.
A cheerleader may not miss more than 2 football games during the season.
Once school begins, any girl who misses 3 or more practices will not be allowed to participate in the competition. If she can show the coaches that she is able to learn the routine, it will then be up to the coaches to determine if she will be allowed to participate and what position she will hold. She will still be expected to cheer at games, and is expected to attend all other practices.
Other Potential Expenses:
Each girl must purchase a ½ or 1 inch 3-ring binder for communication memos.
Competition Shoes
Competition gifts
Coaches Gifts for the end of the year.
Pictures will be taken in September
